Managing the Gmail Contacts by groups

Modified on Thu, 18 May, 2017 at 3:19 PM

When sending email to several people at once, it can be helpful to use a contact group. When you type the name of a contact group in the To, Cc, or Bcc field, you can add all the contacts in that group. This is much faster than adding recipient emails individually.

Accessing Contacts in Gmail

In the upper-left corner of Gmail, click Mail.

In the drop-down list that appears, click Contacts.

Creating contact groups

In Contacts, in the left menu, click New Group.

Enter a name for the new contact group, and then click OK.

Adding contacts to contacts group

In Contacts, use the search bar at the top of the screen to find the person you want to add to a contact group.

On that contact’s page, click the Groups button (groups_button). In the drop-down list that appears, select the check box next to the contact group you wish to add the contact to. If desired, you can select more than one contact group.

With the group(s) selected, click Apply.

Removing contacts from contact groups

In Contacts, under the left menu heading My Contacts, click the contact group you wish to modify.

Select the check box next to the contact’s name you wish to remove from the group.

With the contact selected, click the More button. In the drop-down list that appears, click Delete contact.

Renaming contact groups

In Contacts, under the left menu heading My Contacts, click the contact group you wish to modify.

Click the More button. In the drop-down list that appears, click Rename group.

Enter the new name of the contact group. When finished, click OK.

Deleting contact groups

In Contacts, under the left menu heading My Contacts, click the contact group you wish to delete.

Click the More button. In the drop-down list that appears, click Delete group.

Click OK to confirm.
